Hello! Today I researched movie genres to help me decide what style I want to use for my opening scene.
StudioBinder definition of movie genre: “Movie genres are stylistic categories where a particular movie can be placed based on the setting, characters, plot, mood, tone, and theme.”
Genres help the audience understand what type of story they are going to watch and what to expect from the film.
Genres I know of and enjoy watching:
1. Crime genre
Crime films focus on criminals and the justice system. They often show robberies, investigations, or gang activity and also explore moral grey areas, where it is hard to know who is right or wrong.
- One example of this genre is the movie The Godfather (1972, Francis Ford Coppola)
2. Thriller Genre
Thriller films are made to create suspense, anxiety, and strong emotions. These movies keep the audience nervous and curious about what will happen next. They often include mysteries, danger, or unexpected twists.
- Movie example: Gone Girl (2014, David Fincher)
3. Comedy Genre
StudioBinder explains that comedy films are made to make people laugh. They can use jokes, funny situations, or silly characters. Comedy movies are enjoyable because they are light-hearted and fun to watch.
- Movie example: Home Alone (1990, Chris Columbus)
4. Horror Genre
StudioBinder explains that horror films are centered on terrifying or disturbing events for entertainment. They are made to scare the audience, create tension, and explore fear of the unknown. Horror movies often make viewers feel nervous or shocked.
- Movie example: The Conjuring (2013, James Wan)
For my opening scene, I chose the horror genre, so I made a presentation analyzing this genre more thoroughly!
