For this analysis, I chose the opening scene of the movie Creed (Ryan Coogler, 2015). I believe that this is a great choice because it achieves greatly to settle the tone of a serious drama right at the beginning, showing the audience right away that this is a character driven story, centered in Adonis’ journey and his sports and life story. Starting in Los Angeles in 1998, the scene presents the setting of a youth detention center where Adonis, the main character, is described as confrontative and conflictive. What the audience sees first is a group of young boys forming a line, directed by the security of the detention center, building an equilibrium by constructing an order, nothing out of the ordinary; however, this equilibrium is broken quickly when a fight between Adonis and another young boy settles, showcasing his character and personality. Apart from that, once Mary Anne Creed, Adonis’ father’s widow visits him, revealing something about his past and later on legacy. This pivotal moment changes the story’s direction because it reveals his father's identity and offers him a completely different future – leaving the audience with a clear idea of the tone, genre, setting and a lot of expectations for what’s about to come in the course of the movie.
